Your role

You will lead the implementation of Client and Consumer Protection Standards(CPS) in FMO's investment process. Reporting to the SSI Manager, the Client Protection Standards Officer will focus on ensuring that FMO's clients deliver financial services safely, responsibly, and fairly to end-users.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing and maintaining our CPS processes and procedures, such as:
    • Updating FMO's Client Protection policy statement.
    • Enhancing the CPS assessment tool and integrating it with due diligence tools.
    • Developing a process for monitoring post-investment client protection risks.
    • Integrating CPS into systems for precise information capture.
  • Designing governance protocols to ensure accountability and compliance with EU Sustainable Regulatory due diligence.
  • Staying updated on regulatory changes, emerging risks (for example, fintech/digital lending), and industry developments. Participating in relevant conferences.
  • Engaging in industry discussions and policy developments with stakeholders (for example, Cerise+SPTF, GOGLA) and Development Finance Institutions.
  • Building internal knowledge on client protection through training and technical guidance.
  • Serving as the key person for publishing client protection information.
  • Coordinating with FMO's Client Protection sector representatives and chairing relevant meetings.
  • Advising sector departments on Client Protectoion Standards, especially for complex transactions, and supporting the monitoring and implementation of action plans.

The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience in client protection and be able to integrate risk-based client protection due diligence into the investment process clearly.

  • Gross yearly salary ranging from EUR 65K-90K on a 40-hour contract (including holiday allowance 8%), depending on your seniority, years of relevant experience, and background.

Your team

The ESG+ Department has lately set up a new Sustainability Standards and Integration team. This team is in charge of capacitating the organization to conduct due diligence in line with sustainability focused legislation, regulation and standards embedded in our Sustainability Policy. This team develops the requisite tools, due diligence guidance and protocols to integrate innovative sustainability standards in our process and procedures. Areas of focus currently include, EU sustainable finance regulation, climate risk and Paris alignment assessment at client and transaction level, as well as customer protection. When there is a need for complex transactions in this realm, the team may also provide due diligence support to the sector departments, extra to the ESG due diligence conducted by the ESG teams.

Your background

  • Master's degree in international law, social and economic studies, or a related field
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience, including projects in microfinance in emerging markets.
  • Knowledge of client protection regulations, including the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and related standards
  • Experience with risk-based client protection due diligence, utilizing principles from frameworks such as the OECD High-Level Principles on Financial Consumer Protection and the Client Protection Principles by the Center for Financial Inclusion/Cerise-SPTF
  • Understanding of banking business aspects
  • Proven experience in the financial sector or in applying the consumer protection aspects of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises
  • Expertise in developing due diligence tools, guidelines, and processes.
  • Strong service and client orientation
  • Excellent communication skills in English (both written and oral), with additional foreign language skills preferred.
